ERT: Tell me about yourself

IN: My name is Ivor Akimu Nylander I am currently working as a Tailor for Harrods and a Pattern Cutter and Tailor for Nylander Couture.

ERT: What were your parents job?

I was born in Manchester my parents Emeric Nylander who was a talented Architect and my mother Marjorie Nylander a Machinist who worked in a factory making parachutes and for the couture designer Bruce Oldfield.

ERT: What did you want to be when you were younger?

IN: My original goal was to be a doctor but once I found out I will need to study for 7 years to do a PHD I put my heart and soul into creating music with my music friends.

ERT: How did you get into fashion?

IN: I first came across dressmaking watching my mother as a small kid using this amazing contraption in my eyes called a sewing machine. At that young age I was more interested in the sewing machines technology and mechanics than the garments my mother created.

ERT: When did you become serious about fashion?

IN: I started to take fashion seriously when I was in my teens perusing multiple fashion magazines with my stylish best mate in Basildon Essex. We both later applied to venture to Southend Technical college to study .
I did a Diploma in Fashion and Textiles after being encouraged by my art teacher .My first introduction to luxury fashion was seeing a Vogue magazine that was left in an empty classroom it was half torn and probably discarded but fell in love immediately. It was like that moment in Pulp Fiction when John Travolta opens the briefcase. I saw these beautiful clothes on these beautiful people with these high price tags.

ERT: What made you fall in love with fashion?

After this, I watched Fashion TV and saw a catwalk show for the first time. It was Fall/ Winter 1991-1992 Versace's show and he had Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, and Linda Evangelista as fully-fledged supermodels, etc strutting down the runway looking stunning, singing ‘’freedom’’ dressed in these beautiful clothes with the music playing and the camera flashes of paparazzi it made it such an exhilarating spectacle to watch. I was hooked by then on, into the fashion industry and wanted to be part of it on some level. This is a picture of the iconic show I watched and fell in love with high fashion.
After meeting one to one with John Galliano at college on a career guide interview who was so encouraging regarding my pursuit in carving myself a career in such a competitive market. I made the transition from Essex boy to London with my first industrial sewing machine hauled in the car by one of my dear music friends. After finishing my course at college I applied for work in factories such as Hobson and Sons who design clothing for the military and governments around the world then I worked up the road in Essex for a company called Jill Duke.
Then I moved to London to freelance for various companies to build up my CV and skills working for French Connection Hussein Chalayan and Nicole Farhi.
My first full-time salaried job was working for Prada as a men’s and womenswear alteration Tailor for 4 and a half years. learned Bespoke Tailoring at Maurice Sedwell (Savile Row) under the pupillage of Professor of Tailoring Sir Andrew Ramroop.
Ivor is building his social media platforms to get more attraction, Nylander Couture has been established in 2000 where he designs for tailors designs for some clients.
